Brad Hutchison wins Donington Race 1 as Bradley Burns is penalised (updated)
Brad Hutchison inherited victory as pole sitter Bradley Burns was hit with a jump start penalty which dropped him to fourth in the first TCR UK race of the weekend at Donington Park.
Audi driver Burns headed the field into the first corner as Hutchison (Cupra) got ahead of Adam Shepherd (Cupra) into second place from third on the grid.
Shepherd even had to defend third from Hyundai driver Callum Newsham who got ahead briefly heading down to the Craner Curves.
But Newsham instead fell into the clutches of Steve Laidlaw (Cupra) who tried to pass the Hyundai driver for fourth heading into Coppice.
But Steve Laidlaw made light contact with Newsham and went off at the exit of Coppice, dropping him down the order.
This saw Sam Laidlaw sneaking past into fourth, but only for a short while as Newsham went into the back of him while braking for the Melbourne Hairpin.
Newsham was able to continue, albeit losing one place to Alistair Camp, while Sam Laidlaw dropped down the order.
The joy was short lived for Camp who lost fourth to Newsham a lap later and later headed into the pits to retire with a mechanical issue.
Burns crossed the line first but was demoted to fourth for his false start, with Hutchison winning the race just over two seconds ahead of Shepherd and four seconds ahead of Newsham.
Stee Laidlaw recovered to finish fifth ahead of Lynk & Co driver Ryan Bensley who rounded off the top six.
Another driver hit with a ten-second jump start penalty was Luke Sargeant, dropping him from fifth to eighth.
The second race of the day starts at 17:40 local time/18:40 CEST.
Update: Callum Newsham has been handed a 24-second penalty for hitting Sam Laidlaw, dropping him from third to ninth, elevating Bradley Burns to third and Steve Laidlaw to fourth.
