Scott Sumpton rules out prospect of BTCC drive this year
Scott Sumpton has ruled out the possibility of driving in the British Touring Car Championship this year, admitting his focus has shifted towards making a return to the series in 2026.
The 20-year-old made his debut in the UK’s premier motorsport series last year with Restart Racing, where he claimed a best finish of 11th at Knockhill – which in-turn netted him victory in the Independents’ class.
Sumpton promptly parted ways with Restart Racing following conclusion of his maiden campaign and had been touted to be involved with a new entry named Vortx Racing.
Despite his best efforts, no new team has materialised and the former TCR UK driver has been unable to secure a deal for the forthcoming season; leading to him to shift his attention to next year.
In a video on social media, Sumpton said: “I’m absolutely devastated to say that I won’t be racing in the BTCC this season.
“We had an amazing proposition that we were sending out to sponsors for a two-car team under the name Vortx Racing. Believe me the interest we had was massive however due to some companies having their budgets tied up for this season we sadly couldn’t make it happen.
“That doesn’t mean they aren’t interested for 2026 though so we will be hitting next year hard, working frantically to get back onto the BTCC grid.”
