Brodie Kostecki wins final Gold Coast race in style

Reigning Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki won the final race of the Gold Coast weekend, heading the Triple Eight duo of Will Brown and Broc Feeney.

Erebus Motorsport driver Kostecki (Chevrolet) started from pole and headed the field ahead of Brown (Chevrolet) as the lights went out.

There was contact in the fight for third place between Chaz Mostert (Ford) and Jack Le Brocq (Chevrolet), with the latter going across the chicane due to the contact.

All eyes were however on a major incident at Turn 11 on the first lap which started due to contact between Anton De Pasquale and Ryan Wood. The incident saw close to half of the field involved as the track was blocked.

The safety car was scrambled and it was not until lap seven that the race was restarted again.

Disaster struck once again for Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Mostert as the team mixed up his and team-mate Ryan Wood’s fuel rig, resulting in Mostert having to pit an extra time for more fuel. This dropped the Ford Mustang driver from the top fight to finish eleventh.

The final pit stops saw Chevrolet Camaro driver Kostecki emerging in the lead with a margin of three seconds to Brown, a gap he kept until the end of the race.

Triple Eight driver Feeney started fifth but worked his way up to finish third.

The Tickford Racing duo of Cameron Waters and Thomas Randle, who finished 1-2 in yesterday’s opening race, came home in fourth and fifth, with Andre Heimgartner rounding off the top six.

The only two drivers with a shot at the 2024 drivers’ title are Brown and Feeney, with Brown heading the standings with a margin of 180 points ahead of the Adelaide season finale on November 14-17.
