Cameron Waters heads Ford 1-2 in Gold Coast opener

Cameron Waters headed his Tickford Racing team-mate Thomas Randle for a Ford Mustang 1-2 in the Gold Coast opener of the Supercars Championship.

Waters started from pole and headed the field from lights to flag.

Randle was close in the early stages of the race but dropped back to finish nine seconds behind in second place.

Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Broc Feeney started fourth but worked his way up to finish third, gaining valuable points over championship leader Will Brown who could only manage seventh in this race.

Feeney made the move for third place with ten laps left of the race, passing Matthew Payne who had to settle for fourth.

Reigning champion Brodie Kostecki, who won the Bathurst 1000 race two weeks ago, came home in fifth for Erebus Motorsport.

David Reynolds finished sixth ahead of Brown while Andre Heimgartner rounded off the top eight.

Brown heads the standings on 2634 points, 171 more than Feeney in second place while Chaz Mostert, who battled technical issues to finish tenth in this race, is third on 2224 points.

Next up for the Supercars field is qualifying for the second race of the weekend, starting at 10:10 local time/18:10 CEST on Sunday.
