Mikel Azcona after first 2024 win: “The most challenging race I have ever done”
Mikel Azcona won his first FIA TCR World Tour race of 2024 in the first race of the weekend at Zhuzhou International Circuit.
The Spaniard started fourth but was able to work his way up to the lead in style, passing three Lynk & Co Cyan Racing drivers, despite tricky conditions as rain increased throughout the race.
“At the start, when I saw the rain drops, I thought that was the only chance for us,” said Azcona.
“In the dry the maximum I was capable of was P4, so I was happy when I saw the rain come. Straight away I was feeling really good. I calculated… 16 laps to go, my pace is really good, I can win.
“So, I tried not to make any mistakes and find the good lines, because for me it was the most challenging race I have ever done, with the slick tyres and the rain. I had to be very careful, because I didn’t want to make mistakes. I love these conditions so I am really happy.”
The win has elevated the Spaniard to fourth place overall, trailing BRC Hyundai team-mate Norbert Michelisz by 27 points.
