Ash Sutton going into BTCC finale with ‘nothing to lose and everything to gain’
Ash Sutton believes he has nothing to lose and everything to gain heading into this weekend’s British Touring Car Championship finale at Brands Hatch.
Bidding to retain his crown and clinch a record-breaking fifth title, the Alliance Racing driver heads to the Kent venue sitting third in the standings – 33 points behind joint leaders Jake Hill and Tom Ingram.
The Ford Focus ST driver clinched the biggest prize in UK motorsport in commanding fashion last year, however a change in approach this season – owing to changes to qualifying and hybrid allocation – has seen him opt for consistency, with two wins and a further 11 podiums his return this season to-date.
Arriving at Brands Hatch this weekend with ground to make up in the race for the championship, the four-time champion has vowed to be on maximum attack as he bids to stage what would be a historic fightback on Finals Day.
“We’ve got an uphill battle ahead of us,” said Sutton. “We need some bad luck to strike both Jake and Tom to bring us back into play , and the chances of that happening is rather unlikely.
“That being said, I’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain this weekend. It’s going to be about doing the best job possible in qualifying and then try take as many points out of them as possible in races one and two.
“I feel like we will have a strong car; we’ve managed to find that sweet spot we’d missed earlier in the season. It’ll be maximum attack and we’ll see what happens!”
