Jake Hill strengthens standings lead with race two win

Jake Hill claimed a crucial win in the second British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Silverstone to strengthen his lead at the top of the standings.

The West Surrey Racing driver fought with race one winner and chief title rival Tom Ingram during the first half half of a damp contest before taking the lead at Brooklands. Once out front, the BMW ace never looked like relinquishing his lead and romped to a seventh win of the year.

Ingram couldn’t hang on to Hill nor second place as Colin Turkington found a way past shortly after Hill and then a few laps later, Josh Cook powered his Toyota Corolla GR Sport past the former title winners Hyundai i30 N.

Hill’s victory, coupled with Ingram finishing fourth, now means that the gap at the top of the standings sits at 11 points with four races remaining.

Dan Cammish endured a relatively lonely race in fifth while Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley scored his best result of the season in sixth. The Cupra driver will start the reverse grid finale starting from pole position.

Completing the top ten was Adam Morgan, Dan Zelos, Aron Taylor-Smith – who now has an unassailable lead in the Independent Drivers’ Championship – and Sam Osborne.

Reigning champion Ash Sutton saw his title aspirations dealt a huge blow as he finished 12th in his Alliance Racing Ford Focus. Sutton had been as high as third at one stage before he was handed a drive through penalty after team members had been working on his car on the grid after the three-minute board was shown.

The weekend’s third and final race at the Home of British Motor Racing is scheduled to start at 17:10.
