BTCC title race poised to intensify further at Silverstone

The battle for the British Touring Car Championship is set to intensify this coming weekend as the UK’s premier motorsport series heads to Silverstone for the penultimate event of the 2024 season.

Six races now remain in the race for the title and the traditional trip to the Home of British Motor Racing is undoubtedly set to play host to more dramatic twists and turns for the six drivers in contention.

West Surrey Racing’s Jake Hill is the driver to beat in the standings after he wrestled back the lead at Donington Park, with a double podium performance allowing him to open up a nine-point advantage in the process.

The BMW driver has found Silverstone to be a happy hunting ground in recent seasons however the National circuit has also treated the driver in second place, former champion Tom Ingram, even better with six wins to his name in Northants.

Both Hill and Ingram will be eager to add to their tallies although they’ll need to be wary of reigning champion Ash Sutton who sits in third. The Alliance Racing driver closed the gap in races one and two at Donington Park only to see his hard work undone with a race three retirement.

Fired up to give himself the best chance at clinching a record-breaking fifth title at Brands Hatch, the four-time title winner will be one to watch in his Ford Focus ST.

The same can be said for fellow multiple champion Colin Turkington who has found form in recent rounds, scoring victory in race one of each of the last three race meetings.

Meanwhile, Dan Cammish and Josh Cook have also tasted success this year and as the remaining two drivers that harbour title aspirations, they’ll be going all-out to make inroads into the aforementioned quartet ahead of them.

With a total of 134 points on offer between now and the season finale at Brands Hatch, every point will be crucial in deciding who walks away as champion – and it all starts at Silverstone on Sunday.

Beyond the title contenders, a number of other drivers will be eager to fight for race honours such as Speedworks Motorsport duo Rob Huff and Andrew Watson, Ford racer Dan Rowbottom, Hyundai hotshots Tom Chilton and Dan Zelos and the remaining BMW of Adam Morgan.

Power Maxed Racing will be worth keeping an eye on too Aron Taylor-Smith and Mikey Doble look to claim unassailable leads in the Independent Drivers’, Independent Teams’ and Jack Sears Trophy categories.

Qualifying at Silverstone will be broadcast on the ITV Sport YouTube channel on Saturday from 15:35 before all three races are aired LIVE on ITV4 on Sunday. Race one is scheduled to begin at 11:30 ahead of race two at 14:20 and race three at 17:10.
