Toyota targets second Supercars team ‘by mid-2025’
Toyota Australia insists that it hopes to secure a second Supercars team by the middle of next season after confirmation that it will join Ford and Chevrolet on the grid in 2026.
Walkinshaw Andretti United will be the homologation team for a new programme with the GR Supra, development of which has already started in house.
A full-scale model of the car is set to appear at the upcoming Bathurst 1000 to give fans a first taste of what to expect when Toyota joins the grid.
Whilst the manufacturer is keen for a multi-team assault on the series, WAU is currently the only outfit that is confirmed as part of the Toyota family, with a focus on adding a second team before the Supra hits the track in competition for the first time.
“About mid-year next year, somewhere around that timing, we’ll be looking for a second team that will work through Walkinshaw as the homologated team obviously,” Sean Hanley, Vice President Sales and Marketing for Toyota Australia told Speedcafe.
“We’ll announce more details in the new year, but clearly we’ve got some thoughts around that. We’ll work through [Walkinshaw] on a process of how we do it, and whether it’s an existing team or whatever we can facilitate, and who would be interested to come and join us?
“We would like to have, ultimately, four cars in the race by 2026, January.”
