Dan Cammish heads opening Donington Park GP practice

Dan Cammish topped the opening British Touring Car Championship free practice at Donington Park, edging out team-mate Dan Rowbottom.

Marking the start of a pivotal weekend around the Grand Prix layout of the Leicestershire circuit, the Alliance Racing driver mastered the damp conditions to top the times by a slender margin of 0.078s.

Championship leader Tom Ingram was next up as he hustled his EXCELR8 Hyundai to third place while reigning champion Ash Sutton and Power Maxed Racing’s Aron Taylor-Smith completed the top five.

Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook was the lead Toyota in sixth ahead of Ingram’s team mate and Knockhill podium finisher Tom Chilton, who ended the session seventh.

Completing the top ten was Andrew Watson, Mikey Doble and the first of the West Surrey Racing BMWs, four-time title winner Colin Turkington.

While the session ran largely without trouble, Toyota’s Rob Huff did find himself in strife early on as he slithered off the track at Goddards. Following a brief red flag, he was able to rejoin the fray.

Free Practice 2 is scheduled to get underway at 12:15.
