Carl Boardley wins final Silverstone race as title rivals hit trouble
Carl Boardley won the final TCR UK race of the weekend at Silverstone as his main title rivals hit trouble.
The Cupra driver started second and snatched the lead from pole sitter Adam Shepherd as the lights went out.
But Shepherd fought back to retake the lead in the final corner of the first lap.
Disaster struck title contender Callum Newsham who tangled with Brad Hutchison at Turn 1, resulting in a broken front suspension for Hyundai driver Newsham who limped back the pits and into retirement.
The next title contender to hit disaster was Shepherd who suddenly slowed while leading at mid-point of the race, handing an easy win to Boardley.
The front splitter came loose on Shepherd’s Cupra, causing severe vibrations for the Area Motorsport driver who had to pit for repairs and dropped down to finish eleventh and last.
Steven Laidlaw inherited second place at this stage of the race, but had Hyundai driver Darron Lewis right behind him. And Lewis made the move stick for second place with two minutes left of the race.
CBM With Hart GT driver Boardley won the race by a margin of over ten seconds over Lewis, with Laidlaw claiming the final podium position.
Hutchison took his Cupra to fourth place ahead of Audi driver Luke Sargeant, while Matthew Wilson rounded off the top six.
Series promoter Stewart Lines was classified as seventh but received a total of 15 seconds of penalties for violating the track limits.
Boardley heads the standings on 478 points, with Newsham 60 points adrift in second place, albeit before dropping scores.
The next TCR UK race takes place at Thruxton on September 21-22.
