Chaz Mostert claims double victory in Sydney night races

Chaz Mostert dominated the Supercars Championship night race weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park to climb to second place in the drivers’ standings.

The Ford Mustang driver started third in the first race and hunted down race leader Matthew Payne towards the end of the race, with the Grove Racing driver having opted for a one-stop strategy.

Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Mostert was able to snatch the lead with just a couple of laps remaining, clinching his second win of the 2024 season.

The first lap saw an incident between Mark Winterbottom and Macauley Jones, dropping them both down the order.

Mostert won the race by close to three seconds ahead of Payne, with Thomas Randle making it an all-Ford Mustang podium in third place.

And it was a strong race for Ford, with the top five drivers driving a Mustang. Will Davison was a distant fourth, 18 seconds from Mostert, with Dick Johnson Racing team-mate Anton De Pasquale rounding off the top five.

Will Brown was the best Chevrolet Camaro driver in sixth place for Triple Eight.

The second race saw a similar outcome as the first, with Mostert chasing down a one-stopper, albeit this time Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters of instead of Payne.

Waters had opted for a one-stop strategy while Mostert went in for a stop twice.

Mostert was able to get past Waters with eleven laps left and pull up an eight-second lead as the chequered flag fell.

Points leader Brown had a better second race to finish third ahead of Payne.

Brown heads the drivers’ championship on 1746 points, 105 points ahead of Mostert while Brown’s team-mate Broc Feeney had a tough weekend with an eleventh-place finish in the second race – dropping him to third in the points.

The next Supercars race takes place at Symmons Plains on August 17-18.
