Jonathan Engström added to Ljungbyhed entry list
Jonathan Engström will make his debut in the STCC this weekend after the teenager was named in the revised Exion Racing line-up.
The 19-year-old son of STCC veteran Tomas Engström will drive the BMW i4 previously raced by Lukas Sundahl and which was slated to be raced by Linus Ohlsson at Ljungbyhed.
Sundahl has instead been moved over into a VW ID.3 to replace Ola Nilsson.
Whilst Engström will be making his series debut, he has previous knowledge of electric race cars having taken fifth in the NXT Gen Cup Junior series last year.
“It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the STCC!” Engström said. “It’s a special feeling as I’ve always followed my father’s races and pretty much grew up in the STCC pit.
“The NXT Gen Cup cars are front wheel drive while the STCC cars are rear wheel drive and have much more power. But I have competed in V8 Thunder Cars and those cars are more similar in that way, it’s important to drive by feel.
“I think I will be able to adapt quickly and perform well, but at the same time it is STCC and the battle at the top is as fierce as ever. I will take this more as a learning weekend.
“I am of course interested in driving a full STCC season in the future, but we have not come that far yet. This chance came up late and now I’m focusing on building good conditions, so we’ll see.”
