Mikel Azcona heads dominant Hyundai 1-2 in Mid-Ohio qualifying

Mikel Azcona was untouchable in the FIA TCR World Tour qualifying at Mid-Ohio, leading BRC Hyundai team-mate and points leader Norbert Michelisz by more than half a second.

The closest rival to the Hyundai drivers was Lynk & Co Cyan Racing’s Thed Björk, close to eight tenths adrift in third.

Ma Qing Hua put his Lynk & Co 03 TCR in fourth spot on the grid for the first race, 0.872 seconds from pole.

Esteban Guerrieri was once again fastest of the Honda drivers, claiming fifth place, close to 1.4 seconds from Azcona.

Néstor Girolami (Hyundai) was sixth fastest ahead of the Cyan Racing duo of Santiago Urrutia and Yann Ehrlacher, both who have a 12-place engine change grid penalty for the first race.

The GOAT Racing duo of Dusan Borkovic and Marco Butti was ninth and tenth, meaning a front-row start for the reversed-grid second race.

The first race of the weekend starts at 08:30 local time/14:30 CEST on Saturday.
