David Reynolds beats Brodie Kostecki to Gold Goast finale win

David Reynolds beat Supercars Championship points leader Brodie Kostecki to win the Gold Coast 500 finale and heads title rival Shane van Gisbergen, who finished fifth today, by 131 points ahead of the Adelaide finale.

Erebus Motorsport driver Kostecki started from pole and got a good getaway ahead of Reynolds.

But the safety car was called into action on the first lap as James Courtney and Tim Slade collided at Turn 4, also collecting Macauley Jones. All three drivers retired due to the sustained damage.

The restart saw Kostecki continuing in the lead with Grove Racing driver Reynolds right on his rear bumper.

Kostecki completed his first pit stop on lap 16 while Reynolds remained out until lap 32.

Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen, who finished second yesterday, meanwhile started ninth and completed his first stop on lap 31 and his second on lap 51, working his way up to the top five as the race neared its end.

The leading duo of Kostecki (Chevrolet) and Reynolds (Ford) completed their final stops on lap 56 and 60 respectively.

Reynolds emerged in the lead after his final stop, less than a second ahead of Kostecki who started to reel his rival in.

The two swapped places several times in the final part of the race, with the lead fight being briefly halted on lap 79 of 85 as Scott Pye hit the wall at Turn 4.

The race resumed with four laps left and Reynolds managed to stay ahead of Kostecki, with just 0.1889 seconds separating the two.

Cameron Waters, who won the race yesterday, started fourth and finished a strong third for Tickford Racing.

Matt Payne was fourth ahead of van Gisbergen while James Golding rounded off the top six.

Kostecki leads on 2969 points ahead of the Adelaide season finale, held on November 25-26, with van Gisbergen second on 2565 points and Brown third on 2201 – now out of title contention.
