Fourth ‘a fair result’ for Colin Turkington

Colin Turkington said he felt fourth on the grid was a ‘fair result’ after qualifying on the second row for the latest rounds of the BTCC season at Donington Park.

Turkington was the quickest rear-wheel drive car in the session after a solid session that saw him gradually improve his lap times before ultimately ending up just under half a second away from top spot.

It leaves the Northern Irishman well placed going into race day as he looks to fight back from a tough weekend last time out at Knockhill.

“Fourth is a fair result and it’s pretty much where we’ve been this year,” he said. “Qualifying was tough because of the limited dry running in practice and the balance wasn’t what I needed, though we did improve the BMW throughout and I thought the lap was decent.

“We need things to be perfect to challenge for pole and when they’re not, like today, we’re close, but not quite there. I hope things can come back towards us a bit tomorrow. We’ll do everything we can.”

Team-mate Jake Hill posted the sixth best time in the session despite losing his best time to track limits, and will line up in P9 as a result of a penalty carried over from Knockhill.

“I expected to be higher, but the rear-wheel-drive tracks aren’t rear-wheel-drive tracks any more,” he said. “Sixth, with the penalty, becomes ninth, and when your two main title rivals are on the front row, that’s going to make it hard tomorrow.

“From the fifth row I’d think we can probably move forwards to our true position of around fifth or sixth, but to make us any faster than that is going to need a lot of work from the Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport and WSR team.”
