Shane van Gisbergen confirms plans for 2024 NASCAR switch
Shane van Gisbergen has confirmed plans to leave the Supercars Championship to pursue a career in NASCAR from next season.
The defending series champion is under contract to the Triple Eight team for 2024 and had initially said he was committed to honouring his contract, despite team boss Jamie Whincup being quoted as saying that he would be prepared to let his lead driver explore opportunities in the USA.
That all came on the back of van Gisbergen scoring a stunning win on the streets of Chicago on his debut in the Cup Series, with a further outing planned in the upcoming event on the Indianapolis road course.
Amidst ongoing speculation about his future plans, van Gisbergen has now revealed that he is actively looking at making a move into NASCAR next year and that if a deal was done, it would not be alongside a continued presence on the Supercars grid.
Van Gisbergen also pointed out his desire to help Triple Eight ensure that a suitable replacement driver could be found to fill his seat.
“Yes,” he replied when asked if a NASCAR move was his full-time aim for 2024 following his win in the second race in Sydney. “I don’t know if it will be full time.
“There’s obviously a lot happening in the background, but I’m not leaving because of this team. I love this team and, when I leave, I want to make sure that there’s someone here to replace me that’s going to do a good job in the car.
“You don’t want to leave the team with nothing, and scrambling to find someone. A lot of the good drivers here are signed up, so, yeah, I want to leave with the team in a good spot.
“Hopefully the team has someone soon.”
