Colin Turkington: Fifth place ‘about right’ in qualifying

Colin Turkington insisted that fifth on the grid was ‘about right’ after qualifying for the latest rounds of the BTCC season at Croft.

The WSR driver has scored more wins than anyone else at the North Yorkshire circuit but wasn’t in contention for pole as the Motorbase-run Fords locked out the first three places on the grid.

Turkington would be one of the few drivers able to improve after the late red flag in the session to secure his place on row three, which he admitted was where he would have expected to be based on the season to date.

“You usually get a red flag thrown in somewhere at Croft, and have to be on track at the right time,” he said. “The lap came quite late on and it was just a case of pushing more and more and getting to the limit.

“Given my record at Croft, I would normally expect more than P5 on the grid, but I think that it reflects the season so far and is pretty much where we have been slotting in.

“The weather forecast for tomorrow is changeable and the rain might come, and it might not. We have to make sure we get the call right on the tyres and I have an idea of which way I want to go, but if it rains, then everything will change…”
