Team Dynamics founder Steve Neal passes away

Steve Neal, the founder of multiple BTCC champions Team Dynamics and father of former title winner Matt, has died at the age of 82.

Neal competed in the series – then known as the British Saloon Car Championship – during the 1960s at the wheel of a Mini Cooper and was a front-runner in his class during a five year spell as part of the grid.

Neal also grabbed an overall win at Crystal Palace.

Following his own racing career, Neal would set up Team Dynamics alongside Ray Bellm in the early 1990s, with the team entering a BMW M3 for Matt Neal in 1992.

That would be the start of a successful Independents programme during the BTCC’s Super Touring era that saw Team Dynamics win four class titles.

The team, now running the Nissan Primera, also memorably became the first Independent team to secure an overall race win when Matt Neal came home first at Donington Park in 1999 – banking £250,000 in the process.

After a brief spell away from the BTCC, the team returned in 2003 and the introduction of the Honda Integra led to back-to-back overall titles in 2005 and 2006.

Becoming the works Honda team from 2010 led to four more titles as Matt Neal secured his third crown, and Gordon Shedden picked up all three of his titles.

Away from racing, Neal would be the driving force behind the successful alloy wheel company Rimstock, which he continued to lead until well into his 70s.

“It is with great sadness we report the passing of our leader Steve Neal, the visionary founder of Team Dynamics Motorsport and a larger-than-life character who left an indelible mark on the racing world,” a statement issued by Team Dynamics read.

“Steve’s passion for motorsports was contagious, and his leadership guided the team to numerous victories and championships.

“With his relentless drive and unwavering determination, he transformed Team Dynamics into a powerhouse, earning the respect and admiration of fans and competitors alike.

“Steve’s infectious personality, combined with his unparalleled knowledge of the sport, made him a beloved figure in the racing community. His legacy will forever be remembered as he takes his final lap, soaring to new heights.”

TouringCarTimes extends its deepest condolences to the Neal family.
