Urrutia questions application of rules after being penalised for Borković contact
Cyan Racing’s Santiago Urrutia was surprised to be penalised for instigating a crash that ruined the day of several drivers in TCR World Tour race two at the Hungaroring.
Urrutia made contact with the rear of Target Competition driver Dušan Borković’s car twice exiting turn one on the opening lap, and the second instance of contact led to Borković being spun out of third and across the track.
Two of the drivers caught up in the melee went no further than lap one, one other spent several laps in the pits while Borković recovered to twelfth then vowed revenge on Urrutia.
Urrutia himself exited contention for the podium with a drive-through penalty he served during the race and then got another 40-second penalty post-race that demoted him to 18th in the final results.
“I got a drive-through. Apparently, the rules are not the same for every weekend,” was his reaction.
“It was a shame because I was running P3, right behind Vervisch, and I think I had the pace to be P1 and P2 with the team. But it is what it is. It’s racing, and now the end of the European part and now we move on to the next one. So let’s focus on Uruguay now with my home race.”
Urrutia is eighth in the standings after eight races of the World Tour. He won in the opening round at Algarve, made the podium at Spa-Francorchamps, but has only once finished higher than seventh in the five races since.
“It wasn’t the European part I was hoping for, but we are leading the team’s championship and the driver’s championship so that’s really good,” he reflected.
