Dan Cammish stays out front with ‘average’ points weekend
Dan Cammish insisted he was pleased to retain his lead at the head of the BTCC standings following an ‘average’ weekend at Brands Hatch.
The Motorbase driver had secured the early championship lead on the back of a double win at Donington Park, and was the man to beat in qualifying as he stuck his Ford Focus on pole right at the end of the top ten showdown element of qualifying.
Electing to run the soft tyre in race one, Cammish slipped to fourth on the second start before getting ahead of Jake Hill on lap two and remained in position to the finish to kick off his weekend with a podium finish.
Race two saw Cammish pick up fifth spot having been overhauled by Jake Hill in the closing stages of the race whilst he would battle through to fourth place in race three to secure a 40 point haul and retain his place at the front of the pack heading to Snetterton in two weeks time.
“I came in as points leader and leave as points leader,” he reflected, “and I’d say the 40 points we’ve scored this weekend is the kind of average you are looking for across the season if you want to win the championship title.
“Looking back, I don’t think we made the right call to run the soft tyre in race one as, with the hybrid as it is, we would probably have been third in that one regardless with the deficit I had compared to Colin [Turkington] and Ash [Sutton].
“Race two we went the wrong way a bit with the set-up considering the change to the medium tyre and the higher temperatures but we still scored fifth, and if an average kind of race ends with P5 then I can’t really complain too much.
“Had we had the soft tyre in race three then I think we’d have been on the podium but we were best-placed driver on the mediums and beat Colin in a straight fight which is good. It shows we can adjust the car to get it in a good place and that is something we can be buoyed by going forwards.”
