Dan Cammish delighted by ‘incredible weekend’
Dan Cammish admitted it had been an ‘incredible weekend’ after a double win at Donington Park saw him grab the early lead in the BTCC standings.
Cammish produced a fine drive in the opening race to come through from the third row of the grid to secure victory, and then added a further lights-to flag win in the final race having been drawn on the reverse grid pole.
It was in stark contrast to twelve months ago when a fire in qualifying almost destroyed his weekend, and means he leaves Donington Park on top of the points ahead of defending champion Tom Ingram.
“Any day with a win in touring cars is a fantastic day so to get two this weekend is incredible,” he said. “Everyone at NAPA has put so much effort in across the winter and you can see where that effort has gone in. I’ve turned over more stones than ever before to get more from myself as you could see last year that there were times that I struggled with the car and there were things I couldn’t drive around, but I have a race car under me now and I could move forwards.
“Race day was ours and we shone in all conditions with a car I felt would have been good in the dry. It was more consistent than the car I had last year and credit to my engineer James Mundy for the work he has put in. This is the start of a long season and I’ll enjoy today as it’s a special time to be involved with this programme and I want to try and make the most of it going forwards.”
Cammish added that his result in race two, when he pitted mid-race to switch to wet tyres having stayed on slicks early on, had been key to ending the weekend on top.
“We had to take the opportunities when we could and race two was the big one for me as we managed to fight back to 13th after pitting which was ultimately the key when we got gifted the reverse grid – but we got gifted it because we’d had the pace to make up places,” he said. “A year ago, I wouldn’t have had the car to do that and it sums up touring cars in a nutshell. This was my first touring car weekend as a married man and two wins from three races isn’t a bad return.”
