Ash Sutton takes victory on 200th BTCC start
Ash Sutton secured victory in his 200th start in the BTCC after a stage-managed one-two finish for the Motorbase-run NAPA Racing UK outfit.
Team-mate Dan Cammish had started from pole after his race one victory and held the lead at the start, with Sutton able to fend off Gordon Shedden’s Honda through the complex for the first time.
The two Fords were able to run together at the front until Sutton made a mistake at the chicane and lost ground on lap four, although he able to hold position ahead of Shedden and fourth-placed Jake Hill.
Cammish was comfortable at the front as Sutton eased away from Shedden, and two laps from the end, Cammish eased off the throttle through turn one to allow Sutton through into the lead to secure maximum points – and a share of the championship lead.
The two Motorbase cars took the flag ahead of Shedden’s Honda, with Hill and Rory Butcher behind having held station throughout the race, with Tom Ingram taking sixth having fought his way ahead of Dan Rowbottom before benefitting from an issue for Ash Hand that saw him retire into the pits in his Astra.
Rowbottom followed him home in seventh ahead of Josh Cook, who battled his way forwards to grab eighth; a forceful move on Stephen Jelley being one of the key moments for the BTC Racing man.
Michael Crees took ninth, with the top ten rounded out by Colin Turkington, who was forced to bounce back from a tricky opening lap that saw him boxed in going through the complex.
Turkington will start from the front row for race three however, with eleventh placed Jelly having been drawn on pole.
As in race one, the main battles would be outside the top ten – with a huge battle involving Aiden Moffat, Ricky Collard, Jason Plato, Jade Edwards and George Gamble ending with Collard grabbing the final point after a bruising drive.
