Néstor Girolami blasts compensation weight strategy by rival teams

Münnich Motorsport’s Néstor Girolami has hit out at the compensation weight strategies rival teams are using in the WTCR, after qualifying in third place at Vila Real.

“We are very concerned about this, I don’t like talking about the BoP or compensation weights, I like to focus on what I have to do, which is driving,” Girolami told TouringCarTimes.

The TCR cars are equalised through a Balance of Performance (BoP) system and, additionally, the WTCR operates a compensation weight system, based on average lap time calculations.

Girolami believes that some rival teams are utilising a strategy to minimise the effect of the compensation weight calculation by setting slower lap times than what they actually have the pace for in order to get a lower average lap time, something he means is counterproductive for the competition.

“It’s very difficult for me talking about this because we are working to get out the maximum we can, the last tenth, rubbing the mirrors against the rails and, then, the event is finished, you see the sector times and see things that don’t add up,” added the Argentinian.

“It happened at Aragon, it’s happening here and it’s frustrating,” explained Girolami. “And then I ask myself why risking so much if it doesn’t pay off when it comes to reality.”

The Münnich Motorsport drivers believes the rules should be revised for next year, in order to ensure that these strategies don’t take place and that what people see on the track is the true performance of the cars.

“I don’t want to point to anybody, I just speak of what I see and would like for this to be looked at, because I think that, for pure motor racing, it should change,” commented Girolami. “Everybody wants to see the show and the drivers giving everything 100% and I think that, from my point of view, that’s not happening.”
