Mikel Azcona cleared from joker lap investigation
BRC Motorsport’s Mikel Azcona was cleared of a joker lap infringement investigation in the second Vila Real race, meaning the Spaniard keeps third place.
Azcona started from third on the grid, a position he kept during the initial stages of the race. The Spaniard was following Team Engstler’s Attila Tassi and was also under pressure from Zengo Motorsport’s Rob Huff.
“I was pushing very hard today, I don’t think I have pushed so hard for so long before,” Azcona said after the race. “I even touched the wall twice trying to follow up Attila (Tassi), so it was very difficult.”
“When I came to do my joker lap I went too fast into it, had to brake hard and missed the apex,” the Hyundai driver explained.
Azcona continues to lead the championship on 153 points, 16 and 20 points more than Cyan Racing drivers Santiago Urrutia and Yann Ehrlacher respectively.
“It’s good that we scored some good points and that we were able to keep our strategy in the Vila Real races,” added Azcona. “Yes, I have a good advantage but everything can happen an all can be gone in a weekend, so we have to keep the momentum and continue working.”
