Cupra partners with EKS for the 2022 ETCR season
Mattias Ekström’s EKS team is to join forces with Cupra for an assault on the 2022 ETCR – eTouring Car World Cup, which will mark the first season for the all electric touring car series as an official FIA series.
Cupra won both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championship in the inaugural PURE ETCR season season last year, with Ekström grabbing the title as part of a four-driver line-up run by the Zengő Motorsport squad.
With Zengő no longer involved in the programme, EKS will now take on the continued development of Cupra’s e-Racer machine and will utilise a number of members of staff who were responsible for running the cars last year.
“We are delighted to announce this exciting new partnership between Cupra and the EKS team,” Dr. Werner Tietz, executive vice president for Research and Development at Cupra, said. “This new collaboration will allow us to develop the Cupra e-Racer even further, as we aim for race victories and back-to-back ETCR titles.
“With ETCR becoming a fully FIA sanctioned World Cup, we could not be more motivated as we prepare for the opening round of the 2022 series in France in May.”
The cars will now be entered under the Cupra EKS banner, with Ekström expressing confidence that the team will be able to challenge for top honours during the year ahead.
“Our new partnership with Cupra marks an exciting time for EKS team, as we enter the world cup of electric racing,” he said. “As always, we are in the ETCR for the win, and Cupra EKS is fully focussed on the forthcoming season.
“We share the passion of the sport and together we look forward to scoring many more race wins and titles under the Cupra EKS banner.”
The team will announce its drivers on April 19th for the 2022 season, which starts in Pau on the 6-8th of May.
