Rory Butcher doubles up at Silverstone

Rory Butcher made it two wins from two with an impressive drive on maximum ballast in the second BTCC race of the weekend.

The Speedworks driver survived a scare after lap one after an investigation into his move for the lead resulted in no further action being taken, leaving the Toyota to start race two from pole position but with plenty of extra weight now onboard.

Butcher took the lead when the race kicked off ahead of Ingram and Josh Cook and build a slender advantage in the opening two laps before a brief caution to recover the car of Nicolas Hamilton from the gravel backed up the field.

On the restart, Butcher took advantage of Ingram coming under pressure from Cook to edge away, with Cook diving down the inside into Brooklands on lap only to then lose the place immediately.

Aiden Moffat, Colin Turkington and Ash Sutton were also tagged onto the rear of the fight for second but the race then went under caution again when Gordon Shedden and Jade Edwards clashed and Edwards ended up beached in the gravel.

Shortly after the restart, Ingram’s hold on second was finally broken as he and Cook went side-by-side for the best part of a half a lap, with the Honda then scampering off after Butcher ahead.

Although he would try a late lunge on the final lap that saw him run across the grass at Brooklands, Butcher was able to prevail to grab the win, with Cook forced to settle for second and Ingram holding on to third.

Ingram was helped by Moffat being forced to try and keep Turkington at bay, with the BMW eventually grabbing the place late on and Sutton also following through on the run to the line as the trio rounded out the top six.

Dan Rowbottom took seventh in his Honda, with the top ten rounded out by Chris Smiley, Stephen Jelley and Jake Hill – who was able to fight his way through to score points after his tricky run in the opener.

Jason Plato would cross the line in eleventh but will start from pole for race three after Andrew Jordan completed the reverse grid draw.
