Colin Turkington proud to bring up West Surrey century

Colin Turkington said he was proud to bring up West Surrey Racing’s century of BTCC race wins after returning to form at Knockhill.

The former champion had endured a wretched run of form heading into the Scottish meeting, having scored just 14 points in the previous six races to fall to ninth in the standings.

Running light as a result, the Northern Irishman qualified on pole for the second time this season and then converted it into victory with a lights-to-flag success in race one – the win being the one that took WSR to 100 victories.

Turkington would the lead race two until the final lap when an error at the chicane allowed Ash Sutton to jump ahead, with a solid eighth in race three allowing him to move up to third in the standings.

“This weekend was all about trying to get back in the championship hunt with only a small amount of success ballast and a BMW that suits Knockhill, and we’ve done that,” he said. We had the BMW in the zone all day, no matter what the weight situation was, and to get a win and a second place is going to be so important heading into the second half of the year.

“I feel a huge amount of pride at being able to give WSR their 100th BTCC win. I made my BTCC debut with WSR in 2002 to be the one to get that milestone result for a team that’s had such sustained success feels fantastic.”

WSR’s first victory came back in the Super Touring era when the team was running the Ford programme, with the team also enjoying success with Honda, MG and then BMW; Turkington’s victory being the 75th win with the latter.
