Damián Fineschi wins Buenos Aires mid-week race for Renault Sport
The Super TC2000 championship held a mid-week round in Buenos Aires following the postponement of the previous round due to covid restrictions. Damián Fineschi took a lights-to-flag win for Renault Sport and was joined on the podium by Chevrolet’s Agustín Canapino and Honda Racing’s Juan Angel Rosso.
Fineschi started from pole and claimed the lead ahead of Rosso and Honda driver Fabián Yannantuoni.
FDC Motorsport’s Marcelo Ciarrocchi and Yannantuoni made contact during the first lap, and both spun off at turn three when battling for third.
That allowed Agustín Canapino to move up to third while Ciarrocchi managed to stay in fourth. Yannantuoni meanwhile dropped to 19th and last.
Ciarrocchi spun off on lap three and forced the safety car out on track.
As the race restarted, Renault Sport’s Leonel Pernía overtook former WTCR entrant José Manuel Sapag of Honda Racing for ninth after a tight tussle at turn five.
Yannantuoni retired on lap 12 due to an engine problem following the earlier contact with Ciarrocchi, who also had to pit and retire due to damage from the incident.
The last 15 minutes of the race saw Canapino closing down on Rosso and was able to get past for second place, using the push-to-pass device.
The last two laps saw Canapino reducing the gap to leading driver Fineschi. But the Chevrolet never got close enough – Fineschi won the race, one second ahead of Canapino and eight second ahead of Rosso.
Toyota driver Julián Santero crossed the finishing line in fourth ahead of team-mate Rossi and Honda driver Facundo Ardusso.
Santero and Rossi share the lead of the standings on 73 points, followed by Pernía on 72 and Ardusso on 65. Super TC2000’s next round be on
