Mikel Azcona claims first WTCR win of new Cupra León Competición

Mikel Azcona claimed an emotional first win of the new Cupra León Competición in the second World Touring Car Cup race of the weekend at MotorLand Aragón.

The Zengo Motorsport driver started from the reversed grid pole position and never looked back after a strong start, winning the race by three seconds.

Yvan Muller made a lightning start from fourth on the grid to claim second place exiting the first corner, passing Hyundai drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Luca Engstler.

Lynk & Co Cyan Racing colleague Santiago Urrutia had a strong start as well from seventh on the grid to snatch third from Tarquini before the end of lap one.

The Lynk & Co duo kept positions two and three throughout the race.

Comtoyou Racing driver Nathanaël Berthon secured fourth place behind the wheel of his Audi RS 3 LMS while Hyundai drivers Tarquini and Engstler dropped down to finish fifth and sixth.

Points leader Yann Ehrlacher made just as in the first race up ground in the race, crossing the finishing line in seventh from 13th on the grid ahead of Lynk & Co colleague Thed Björk.

The Swede reported that he had an electrical issue during the race, having issues to change gear and a loss of his heads up display.

Gilles Magnus finished ninth while Honda title candidate Esteban Guerrieri rounded off the top ten, making his way up from 18th on the grid.

Race one winner Jean-Karl Vernay had a tough blow to his title hopes, suffering a technical issue at the beginning of the race and was forced to retire.

Reigning champion Norbert Michelisz started from the pit lane as the BRC Hyundai team had changed engine after the first race, finishing 15th.

Ehrlacher heads Guerrieri by 27 points while Muller has climbed back to third, 40 points behind the lead. Vernay has dropped back to fourth, 47 points behind.

The third and final race of the weekend starts at 14:15 CET.
