Colin Turkington pleased to reach podium landmark
Colin Turkington said was proud to have reached the landmark of 150 BTCC podiums after a solid weekend at Silverstone allowed to close the gap to Ash Sutton in the standings.
The WSR driver had slipped to second place in the championship on the back of a tough weekend at Thruxton last time out, but was able to outscore Sutton in two of the three races to bring the gap between the pair down from 16 points to four.
The second of those races saw Turkington take full advantage of a late puncture for Tom Ingram to secure what was only his second victory at Silverstone – a result that brought up the impressive record of 150 podiums in the series.
The Northern Irishman admitted that it hadn’t been easy to fight for victory given the relative lack of straight line speed on his car compared to some others on the grid, but was left delighted at the manner in which he had closed the gap to Sutton ahead of the trip to Croft; a circuit where he has an impressive record through the years.
“It’s always nice to celebrate a win, and to get it at a track where I’ve only ever won once before in the BTCC is even better,” he said. “The big takeaway from the weekend is that I’ve more than halved the gap to the lead of the championship, which gives us back some of the momentum we lost at Thruxton. We could do with a bit more straightline speed though because some of the other cars had a big advantage over us in that area.
“Reaching 150 podiums is a nice achievement and it gives me a lot of pride to reach that number. It’s probably an indication of the quality of team and car – like WSR and the BMWs – I’ve had during my career.
