Robin Frijns claims his fourth pole of 2020 at the Lausitzring

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline driver Robin Frijns led his team-mate and championship leader Nico Müller in a new front row for the team at the Lausitzring.

Both drivers beat Team Rosberg’s René Rast in the final moments of the session, with a new battle between the three likely for the race.

Sunny and clear skies welcomed the DTM field on Sunday at the Lausitzring, with dry racing expected in sharp contrast to yesterday.

Rast rose to the top after his second flying lap, with Frijns going straight onto the grass and causing a yellow flag, which ruined team-mate Müller’s attempt.

The last minutes of the session saw Rast improving his personal lap time, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop the Team Abt Sportsline drivers, with Frijns scoring his fourth pole position of the season, pipping team-mate Müller by just 0.018 seconds.

Rast was third, 0.124 seconds behind the Dutchman, with Team RBM’s Sheldon van der Linde again the fastest driver for BMW Motorsport in fourth place, ahead of Green and Team RMG’s Marco Wittmann.

Timo Glock finished seventh for Team RMG, followed by Team Phoenix driver Loïc Duval. Lucas Auer could only manage ninth place for Team RMR.

WRT driver Harrison Newey completed the top ten in his best-ever qualifying of his short DTM career, 0.877 seconds behind Frijns.

Frijns said after the session: “The session was a complete mess from my side. In my second attempt, I used the DRS at the wrong moment, so I didn’t have any left for the main straight, so I lost two-tenths and I thought I had lost the pole position. I hope this time I can stay in this position.”

The start of Race 2 is scheduled for 13:30 CEST.
