Colin Turkington pleased to extend advantage

Colin Turkington admitted it had been a “great day” at Oulton Park after the West Surrey Racing driver extended his lead in the BTCC standings.

Although unable to secure a race win in his BMW 330i M Sport, Turkington ran at the sharp end throughout three tricky races in Cheshire to move 19 points clear of Ash Sutton in the standings heading to Knockhill next weekend.

Fourth and third in the opening two races, Turkington was pushing Adam Morgan for the lead in race three when an accident for Stephen Jelley and Nic Hamilton saw the race red-flagged.

Having swapped places with team-mate Tom Oliphant, Turkington had planned to switch spots again before the finish but with the red flag preventing that move from taking place, Turkington was able to extend his advantage in the standings.

“It’s been a great day and I leave feeling really positive,” he said. “To have two cars on the podium to end the weekend is fantastic and I owe Tom a beer for that one as he let me through to have a go at Adam and then the red flag meant we ran out of laps to give the place back.

“Oulton Park is a circuit where we have gone well historically but the weather has made it tricky this weekend. In race one, we took the maximum points available and then we had more pace in race two and I managed to get ahead of [Dan Cammish] for third.

“All in all it’s been great teamwork by Team BMW and WSR this weekend. We came here to do a job and we did it.”
