Tyler Maxson secures pole ahead of TC America restart
Points leader Tyler Maxson maintained the form he showed at the Circuit of the Americas back in March to secure pole ahead of the resumption of the TC America season at Virginia International Raceway.
The Copeland Motorsports driver had topped both free practice sessions at the wheel of his Hyundai Veloster N TCR and was able to set the fastest lap of the weekend to date in the 15 minute qualifying session to snare pole.
A lap of 1:56.881 was the first lap below 1:57 this weekend, and ensured that the teenager beat the Honda of Victor Gonzalez Jr to pole by three tenths of a second.
Gonzalez headed a trio of Honda drivers as Scott Smithson put his DXDT Racing-run Civic Type R into third ahead of team-mate CJ Moses, with Tristan Herbert the fastest of the returning DSG cars in fifth in his Audi.
Herbert was followed close behind by Roy Block’s Alfa Romeo, and the DSG Volkswagen of Luke Rumberg, with Olivia Askew, Alex Papadopulos and Vinnie Lima rounding out the ten drivers set to compete this weekend.
With the revised schedule meaning Virginia is now a triple-header meeting, Race One will take place later today with a race apiece on Saturday and Sunday.
