Anderstorp keen to secure 2021 DTM slot

Bosses at the Anderstorp circuit have said they are eager to ensure that the Swedish venue can be part of the 2021 DTM season after the cancellation of the planned 2020 event.

Anderstorp – as well as Brands Hatch, Igora Drive and Monza – was dropped from the revised calendar announced by the series as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a ten round schedule being implemented running in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Anderstorp event would have been Sweden’s first ever DTM meeting but the ongoing situation surrounding coronavirus left Scandinavian Raceway, Anderstorp Racing Club and DTM organisers ITR with no option but to cancel the meeting – with the circuit hopeful of instead joining the DTM schedule in 2021.

“Of course, it is incredibly sad that the situation forced this decision,” Peter Eklund, CEO of Scandinavian Raceway, said. “For us at Scandinavian Raceway, and for Swedish motorsport, this is of course a big loss.

“We were really looking forward to delivering the biggest racing competition in the country this summer. However, we must accept that the situation is as it is, and respect the consequences that this pandemic inevitably brings – not least for an international business like DTM. Our clear ambition, which we share with ITR, is to be back on the calendar 2021.”

Marcel Mohaupt, CEO of ITR, gave thanks to both Anderstorp and the three other circuits to have dropped off the calendar for their understanding over the changes made.

“Special times require special measures,” he said. “Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we are not able to carry out this year’s planned race in Anderstorp, Brands Hatch, Monza and St. Petersburg. I would like to express my thanks to the organisers of these competitions for their constructive, understanding and cohesive spirit during these past weeks.”
