STCC issue four-race calendar and plan for races without spectators
The STCC TCR Scandinavia organisation has issued a revised calendar for the 2020 season, featuring four race weekends and plans to host races without spectators.
“We are working to perform this year’s STCC season in a safe way during the late summer and autumn,” said Micke Bern, head of STCC.
“We are working actively on bringing the experience to the fans at home in the best possible way during the current circumstances and we will reveal more details soon regarding an extensive live coverage.”
Events with more than 50 persons are currently banned in Sweden and the STCC organisation is working on a solution for races without spectators on site.
“We are following the regulations of the Swedish authorities and the Swedish Motorsport Federation in order to start racing in a safe way when the conditions are there for it. The safety of everyone involved is our main priority,” said Bern.
“It’s important to emphasize that the calendar is preliminary, especially the first part of it. We see it likely that at least the first two race weekends will be held without spectators. We plan for the worst and hope for the best. If the conditions are there to run races with spectators on site later this year, then it is a bonus.”
The season is planned to start on August 15-16 at Gelleråsen Arena, followed by Skellefteå Drivecenter Arena on August 28-29.
The last two race weekends will be held back-to-back, with Mantorp Park hosting the penultimate round on October 2-3 and Ring Knutstorp hosting the season finale on October 9-10.
“I judge the setup from STCC to be the best possible during the current conditions for everyone involved,” said Richard Göransson, five-time STCC champion and co-owner of Gelleråsen Arena.
“We are going to get a compact and intense season, with the right conditions to perform it in a safe and attractive way.”
A first official pre-season test will be held at Gelleråsen Arena on July 2, with a mid-season official test on September 11 at Mantorp Park.
Gone from the calendar are Falkenberg and the Copenhagen Grand Prix.
The STCC has currently got 14 drivers entered, with the STCC organisation stating that more are to be revealed during the spring.
