MG monitoring WTCR ahead of TCR Asia expansion in 2020

SAIC Motor-owned MG debuted the MG6 XPower TCR this year, with the new car showing promising form in the selected races it took part in. The team behind the car will expand to the TCR Asia series in 2020 on the back of a solid first season on track.

“We are quite delighted with the result of 2019,” said Micheal Ma, team manager of Team MG XPower to TouringCarTimes.

“The new cars finished almost all of the races and Rory [Butcher] took a fourth place in the FIA Motorsport games, a miracle result for the team and the new car.”

The team ran two cars for selected races of the TCR China championship under temporary homologation and the FIA Motorsport Games with the homologation finalised.

For 2020 the team will take part in the TCR Asia series, with the car also available to customer teams in other championships.

“We will upgrade the MG6 during this winter and take part in TCR Asia in 2020,” said Ma.

“After the FIA Motorsport games, a lot of clients have asked MG about the car. We will build and sell cars when we finish the R&D for the 2020 version of the car. You will see those new cars in some other TCR series after May next year.”

It has been speculated that MG would enter the World Touring Car Cup and the team is monitoring the series closely.

“We still have a wait-and-see attitude for the WTCR,” Ma said. “It depends on the performance of our MG6 in 2020.”
