Marco Wittmann heads René Rast by six tenths in final Hockenheim practice
BMW Team RMG driver Marco Wittmann set the fastest lap time in the second and final free practice session at Hockenheim ahead of Audi Sport Team Rosberg driver René Rast.
The rain stopped falling 40 minutes before the session, with the track drying quickly and the entire field venturing out on the track on slicks.
R-Motorsport’s Paul di Resta went straight against the barriers halfway through the session with an apparent steering column failure, causing a slow zone.
Wittmann set a best lap time of 1:29.881, six-tenths ahead of Rast and seven over team-mate Timo Glock. Jamie Green, with the second RS 5 DTM of Team Rosberg was fourth, ahead of Team Abt Sportsline’s Nico Müller, already a full second off the pace.
Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Mike Rockenfeller was sixth, followed by BMW Team RBM’s Philipp Eng. WRT’s Pietro Fittipaldi finished eighth, 1.2 seconds behind Wittmann.
The third M4 DTM from Team RMG was ninth in the hands of Bruno Spengler, with Audi Sport Team Phoenix’s Loïc Duval completing the top ten, 1.3 seconds off the pace.
Daniel Juncadella was the fastest driver for R-Motorsport in twelfth place, nearly two seconds off the pace.
Jenson Button, driving a Honda NSX-GT, was again the fastest among the Japanese cars in 15th place, 2.1 seconds off the top time, with Ryo Hirakawa placing the Lexus LC500 in 17th position.
The DTM season finale continues on Saturday morning with the qualifying session for Race 1, scheduled for 10:35 CEST.
