Supercars, TCR Australia remain in contention for fifth Bathurst event
Bathurst Regional Council has confirmed that Supercars and the company behind TCR Australia are the final two bidders in the battle to secure a fifth event at the Mount Panorama circuit.
The famous venue currently hosts four events across the year – the Bathurst 12 Hour, the Bathurst 6 Hour, the Bathurst 1000 and Challenge Bathurst – with the local council having invited expressions of interest in a potential fifth race meeting earlier this year.
Six expressions of interest were lodged with the council by the deadline in late April, which was then cut down to a shortlist of three.
Mountain Motor Sports, the company behind the AASA Australian Tarmac Rally Championship, has now dropped out of the running to leave Supercars and the Australian Racing Group – promoters of TCR Australia – as the two bidders who will now look to secure the additional date.
“Council is currently finalising the tender specification and we expect the two companies invited to take part in that process will receive those documents before the end of the month,” mayor Graeme Hanger said. “We anticipate Council will consider these tenders in September.”
It is believed that a fifth event on the full Bathurst circuit could be in place as early as next year.
