Compensation weight calculation changed with immediate effect

The way the compensation weight is calculated for the World Touring Car Cup has been changed with immediate effect, with the World Motor Sport Council last week ratifying a change to the formula in the sporting regulations.

With teams deemed to have been deliberately avoiding setting competitive laps during the races, and therefore escaping hefty changes in compensation weight, on the back of feedback from teams and the promoter, the FIA has decided to revise the system, with qualifying now weighted more heavily in terms of the calculation.

Up until now, the lap times from qualifying were weighted as 1.5, against 1.0 for the races, meaning the cars’ qualifying performance was one and a half times more important when calculating the compensation weights.

The change now values qualifying at 2.0, and the races at 0.7, meaning qualifying results are now nearly three-times the value of race performances in respect of determining the next race meeting’s weights.

The compensation weights allocated for this weekend’s race at the Nürburgring are unaffected, with the sporting regulations now in force as of June 14th, meaning they will first affect the weights for the following round in Portugal in two weeks’ time.

This weekend, the Hyundai i30 N TCRs will carry the maximum ballast, despite the dominant performance of Lynk & Co last month at Zandvoort in qualifying, with the Chinese cars far down the timing sheets in the races.
