Team Engstler enter five cars for TCR Malaysia
Team Engstler has confirmed a total of five cars for the inaugural TCR Malaysia series season, adding drivers Theo Coicaud, Kai Jordan, Henry Kwong and Michael Soong alongside already confirmed driver Luca Engstler.
“It will definitely be a busy year for us in Team Engstler and we are going in full steam after a short Christmas break. It was hard work to build the new team structure with new mechanics and crew, especially with the new cars for the Malaysian races but we managed a strong team,” said Kurt Treml, sport and marketing director for Team Engstler.
Three of the drivers will drive Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR race cars while Luca Engstler, Theo Coicaud and Michael Soong will drive a Hyundai i30 N TCR. Coicaud will only drive the first race weekend as Soong takes over his Hyundai for race weekends two and three.
Team Engstler will continue their cooperation with the Sepang International Circuit organisation to promote Malaysian motorsport talents as one of the Volkswagens will be shared by three Malaysian drivers throughout the three races of the 2019 season.
“We are happy and proud in our collaboration with SIC. We will actively be a part of the circuit’s young driver development program for the next 3 years and we are excited to start the season once more,” said Treml.
The best performing driver of the three Malaysian drivers from the TCR Malaysia series season will be selected by the team and Mitchell Cheah, who claimed the runner-up spot of the 2018 TCR Asia series for the team, to continue their participation with Team Engstler in the 2019 TCR Asia series.
“The next step for Mitchell is, together with the team, to assess the nominated drivers from the 2018 Malaysia Championship Series (MCS). His fresh experience with the team will prove invaluable and he will be able to closely assist and guide the new drivers in their TCR Malaysia journey,” said Razlan Razali, CEO of Sepang International Circuit.
