Jack Goff puts focus onto independents’ title

Jack Goff will hope to make up ground in the independents’ standings after qualifying on the second row of the grid for the penultimate meeting of the BTCC season at Silverstone.

The Eurotech driver heads into the weekend third in the standings behind Tom Ingram and Tom Chilton having seen his chances of the overall title all but ended by difficult weekends at both Croft and Rockingham earlier in the season.

The silver lining of dropping to eighth overall means less ballast on his Honda Civic Type R this weekend, which allowed Goff to set a best time just 0.078s down on pole sitter Sam Tordoff – with his aim for race day being clear.

“The two weekends where we picked up next to no points have done the damage for us this season,” he said. “You might get away with one of those weekends, but not two in a championship this competitive.

“It’s a shame because after Snetterton we had clawed back some of the ground we lost at Croft and at Rockingham I thought we’d do well. After qualifying we were nowhere and that cost us on race day, so even after a decent Knockhill, we’ve come here with our title hopes pretty much done.

“There is still the Independents’ title for us to think about though and we are certainly in a position to challenge for that, and we’ll see what we can do now from P4 on the grid. The indie title and top three overall finish are still within reach, which means we still have something to fight for over these final two rounds.”
