Audi confirm 2019 season but demand three manufacturers for 2020
Audi has confirmed a continued DTM programme for 2019, but has also stated that a minimum of three manufacturers must be on the grid in 2020 for them to continue.
The statement from Audi read: “Following Mercedes-Benz’ exit, a minimum of three brands being represented from 2020 on at the latest will be the prerequisite for Audi’s continuing DTM commitment.”
2019 will mark the first season since 2011 that only two manufacturers have been on the grid in the form of Audi and BMW, as Mercedes-Benz will leave after the current season.
“Concerning the third manufacturer this will require, I have great confidence in DTM boss Gerhard Berger bringing this competitor to the grid for 2020 at the latest,” said head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass.
The main change for the 2019 season will be the introduction of two-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines as part of the new Class One regulations, also adopted by the Japanese Super GT series.
“Four-cylinder turbo units with two liters of displacement provide a good mix of performance and efficiency. They are the most important engines worldwide and will be used in Class One starting in 2019. As a result, the DTM – just like Formula E – will receive an increased reference to production development,” said Peter Mertens, Member of the Board of Management, Technical Development, Audi AG.
