Tom Ingram closes in ahead of the Diamond Double
Tom Ingram produced a stunning drive through the field in the second race of the weekend to ensure that the top two in the BTCC standings will go into the Diamond Double split by just four points.
The Speedworks driver had been due to line up down in 27th spot after retiring with an alternator issue in race one but was one of the big movers on a drying circuit as he romped through the pack in his Toyota Avensis.
Quickly fighting his way into the top ten, Ingram continued to pick off the drivers ahead to move closer to the podium and on the final lap was able to edge ahead of Dan Cammish’s Honda to secure third spot and his fifth podium of the year.
“I’ve no idea where that came from,” he said. “We were frustrated not to score in race one and had loads of messages from people after race one which gave me a lot of inspiration.
“I really wanted to try and get into the points and whilst the Safety Car helped us a lot, I didn’t expect us to get up as high as third. That was just what we needed.
“With the double points on offer, the championship might take a real turn in the next race…”
Defending champion Ash Sutton now sits third in the standings having taken victory in the second race and is just 13 points off top spot, with Josh Cook up to fourth.
Jack Goff failed to score after he was unable to make it out of the pits in time to take up his position at the head of the grid.
