Tom Coronel surprised with yellow flag improvements in qualifying

Tom Coronel has said he’s surprised with the number of competitors who were able to improve their lap time during the final moments of qualifying, when waved yellow flags were out for debris on circuit.

The Boutsen Ginion Honda driver had backed off for the yellow flags which marked a wheel lining which was lying on the circuit but remarked a number of cars ahead of him did not and went on to improve their times, dropping the Dutchman to ninth in the final order.

“There was a yellow flag for a part on the road. (James) Thompson slowed down, and I also slowed down, but there were six or seven cars in front of me who did not slow down at all,” said Coronel to TouringCarTimes.

“It’s very simple, you cannot improve your time when there’s a yellow sector. That’s an uphill part of the circuit, so if you did slow down, you’d lose momentum through the whole straight so you can never be fast.

“I’m not going to protest or anything, but I’d be very surprised if they get away with it, as you have to show the stewards that you slowed down.”
