René Rast again on top in the final Nürburgring practice session
Team WRT’s René Rast was again fastest in the second practice session for this weekend’s round of the World Touring Car Cup at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with the endurance specialist topping the time sheets in a drying session in his Audi RS 3 LMS.
Tom Coronel had set the early pace in his Boutsen Ginion Honda Civic in slightly drier conditions than at the end of the first practice session, but the faster times started to fly in during the final 15 minutes, with first the DG Sport Compétition Peugeot 308TCR of Aurélien Comte going fastest of all, before the two Team WRT Audis of Jean-Karl Vernay and then René Rast improving on that with the times now in the 10:25s.
With five minutes to go, Coronel was back on top in the Honda, before he was soon pipped by reigning WTCC champion Thed Björk in the YMR Hyundai i30 N TCR by 5.5 seconds.
René Rast then went faster again on his final run, beating Björk’s time by just two-tenths of a second, with Jean-Karl Vernay jumping to third in Rast’s slipstream, with Yann Ehrlacher finishing the session fourth fastest in his Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic.
Norbert Michelisz was the best-placed of the BRC Racing Team Hyundais in fifth.
Qualifying 1 is next up for the WTCR and is scheduled for 15:30 CET.
