JTCC changed to a class within STCC for the 2018 season
The Junior Touring Car Championship (JTCC) will be incorporated as a class within the STCC for the 2018 season, open for drivers between 17 and 22 years of age.
”The growth of young drivers within our sport is decisive for the future of the STCC and Swedish motorsport,” said Hans Bååth, Chairman of STCC AB.
”We are convinced that this format will have a positive effect on just that. We have seen plenty of great talents grow through the STCC such as Mattias Ekström, Richard Göransson, Thed Björk and many more.”
The JTCC has previously been held in a separate championship, most recently with Renault Clio Cup and previously with a unique set of regulations that featured smaller hatchbacks, as well as Volvo S60 Challenge.
Drivers eligible for the JTCC will have their own championship table and the winner of each race will be honoured on the podium no matter the overall position in the race alongside the top three.
”By having JTCC in the main class with the same cars as everyone else in the STCC and also as the world cup WTCR, the junior drivers will get the best possible education for the future to find a drive with not only the top teams of the STCC but also international drives,” said Bååth.
Former JTCC champions include Jens Edman, Daniel Haglöf, Linus Ohlsson and Jocke Mangs.
