Adam Morgan delighted to return to the top of the podium

Adam Morgan admitted he was thrilled to return to the top step of the podium after securing a first BTCC win since 2016 at Donington Park.

Morgan had endured a tough start to race day after contact from team-mate Tom Oliphant in the opening race saw him forced off through the gravel and left him well down the field going into the second race of the weekend.

Showing strong pace in his Ciceley Motorsport-run Mercedes however, Morgan fought his way through the field in race two to finish fifth before a strong drive in race three saw him fend off the challenge of Josh Cook to take victory.

It leaves Morgan now second in the standings behind Tom Ingram and he said he was pleased to see his win drought come to an end.

“When you finish race one in 23rd after a trip through the gravel, you don’t expect to come back and win,” he told TouringCarTimes. “It’s testament to the guys in the workshop who have built a strong car I can push with and that looks after its tyres well. To get fifth in race two was great, but to get a win was unbelievable.

“It was important for us to get back to winning ways as we showed we had pace last year but didn’t get a victory. We’ve got that win early this season and have a few podiums, and we want to get more. It’s nice to be second in the standings this early and whilst we could have had some more points on the board without the issue in race one, we’ve come back well to put ourselves in a good position.

“Thruxton will be hard with the weight for qualifying but we’ll do what we can when we go there next and aim to score some good points, as it’s all about being consistent.”
