Gabriele Tarquini extends his championship lead after successful weekend in Hungary
BRC Racing Team’s Gabriele Tarquini has left with an extended lead of the World Touring Car Cup standings after another successful weekend in the championship, scoring a victory in Race 3 at the expense of his Hyundai team-mate Norbert Michelisz in front of his partisan crowd, and scored the most points over the course of the weekend to leave 36 points clear of Münnich Motorsport Honda driver Yann Ehrlacher.
Tarquini finished sixth in Race 1 yesterday, followed that up with fourth in the reversed grid Race 2 from eighth on the grid, and then won the final race, jumping ahead of his team-mate at the start, where the team then stayed in formation, with Tarquini leading BRC’s first 1-2 result in the WTCR.
“I’m very sorry for Norbi because he made a fantastic weekend and in the end he finished without a win,” said Tarquini.
“Today was fantastic because he scored a fantastic pole position and he was in the best position to win the third race. Unfortunately for him, my start was better than his start, and this was the key to my win. With the same car, it’s very difficult to overtake the car in front of you. Norbi was very fast on this track, he was unbeatable in qualifying and in every session he was faster than me, but in the end the only key to win the race was to beat him on the start, so I tried my best and it happened.”
