Helder Assunção wins dramatic Chinese Racing Cup
Macanese driver Helder Assunção won his home event in a high-attrition Suncity Group Chinese Racing Cup. The Tianjin LEO Racing driver finished ahead of David Zhu, with Brian Lee completing the podium.
Drama started straight away as a first-corner incident eliminated six cars. The incident caused a red flag, after which the safety car guided the field to a restart after a long stop to clean up the track from debris and fluids.
Zhang Zhi Qiang took the lead and started opening a huge gap as Assunção attacked Zhu for second. The Macanese driver put the duel to an end when he overtook his fellow Baic D50 driver on lap four. On the seventh lap a mechanical issue caused drama as race leader Zhang Zhi Qiang slowed down towards the end of the second sector, before finally stopping his Baic just before Black Sands.
With two laps to go Liu Lic Ka pulled off two brilliant overtaking moves on Henry Lee and Liu Yang to progress up to fourth. Out of 25 starters, only 10 finished the race
Helder Assunção won ahead of David Zhu and Brian Lee. Liu Lic Ka finished in fourth aheadh of Henry Lee and Liu Yang. Wan Jin Cun finished a distant seventh ahead of Michael Choi, who had an entertaining fight for eighth place with Mak Chi Wai and Eric Kwong, who completed the top ten in his Elegant Racing SEAT.
